Something-for-Everyone Classes: Immerse yourself in a full week of classes; study, nurture, and expand your skills without distractions. Choose either a full-week class or two half-week classes taught in person by distinguished and talented professionals from around the world. From traditional forms and techniques to the modern, eclectic, and emergent, you can discover it here. Classes are small, providing opportunity for lots of personal attention and interaction. The creative energy you absorb in this one exciting week will inspire you well into the future. Or, if you are in need of a jumpstart, this experience will propel you forward and your artistic spirit will flourish.
Class Schedule: All classes are hands-on. You can choose to take either a full-week class or take two half-week classes. Classes run from Sunday, June 26 to Friday, July 1. A total of 30 hours of instruction.
On Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, classes are held from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. On Tuesday and Friday, classes are held from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. There is a Lunch Break from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM every day. Tuesday afternoon is a class-free afternoon. Friday afternoon is the traditional “Show and Share,” where students can share the work created over the week. This event is an excellent opportunity to see and experience the range of work that was produced during this collaborative week!

A Beautiful Setting: You will enjoy leisurely strolls through beautiful redwood-lined paths as you make your way from your comfortable room to delicious meals and state-of-the-art classrooms on the campus of Sonoma State University. On-campus housing includes all meals with many tempting dining options at The Kitchens, accommodating most dietary requirements. Modern, four-bedroom suites are complete with a living area and a kitchen. Choose a single room, or share a double room; each bedroom has a private bath. A commuter option is available. From the heart of wine country, you are a short drive to San Francisco, the East Bay or the California coastline. Discover quaint downtown Sonoma nearby with many shops and restaurants.
Events: The Conference itinerary includes: evening lectures by renowned artists; a market night at which fellow scribes can sell their calligraphic art; demonstrations of technique by faculty members; evening social gatherings; faculty, participant, and pop-up exhibits; a two-day vendor trade show; entertainment; an on-site store for most class supplies; and guaranteed new discoveries.
Excursions: On your Tuesday class-free afternoon, enjoy a dip in the outdoor campus pool, stroll the campus, relax and visit with friends, view several calligraphy exhibits, and shop. Or join one of the group excursions being offered, including a visit to the triennial Kalligraphia exhibit sponsored by Friends of Calligraphy at the San Francisco Public Library. In addition to these opportunities available through the Conference, there’s plenty to see and do on your own.
A FEW THOUGHTS FROM THOSE IN THE KNOW…
FLOURISH! The overarching reason that the international calligraphy conference has continued annually for 40 years, and will continue for many more, is the people. We love letters and almost everything involving letters — the history, the look, the tools, the potential. We like to talk about them, learn about them, make them, and explore all the arts connected to them. We don’t think that’s weird. Even if you don’t know anyone when you arrive, you’ll have scores of friends by the time you leave.
I attended my first conference as a calligraphy neophyte, prepared to be intimidated and perhaps even patronized. Instead, I was embraced by a beneficent community of students and teachers who continue to support my study and practice.

Only at this conference could I sit next to any person in the cafeteria during lunchtime and start a discussion on their favourite paper and not be looked at like I was crazy. I hope to continue going for years to come.
Erin NeilsonCalligraphers, from novice to professional, come from all over the world and are so friendly and sharing. I am fortunate to have attended two and have made lifelong friends. Besides being totally immersed in everything calligraphic, there is shopping! I get to see and feel tools, books, and products that are hard to find, unique, or just the latest and greatest best thing and they are brought to us on campus! I can hardly wait!
Ellie HattoriRendez-Vous 2019 was a great introduction to the art of calligraphy. The wide variety of techniques and styles on display meant there was never a moment without some captivating demonstration of calligraphic mastery. The instructors were highly knowledgeable and approachable; their passion inspired me to branch out and try styles I had not previously considered.
